Titan Unitarian Universalist Student Group
The Titan Unitarian Universalist Student Group is an officially recognized, student organization at UW Oshkosh. Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religious community which doesn’t identify with any one creed or belief system. Unitarian Universalists include people who are inspired by Christianity, Buddhism, atheism, agnosticism, Hinduism, Humanism, Judaism, Islam, Paganism, and other diverse and divergent spiritual inclinations. UUs meet together to enrich their personal spirituality and to promote social justice, through an open, respectful community exploring comparative religious beliefs, encouraging independent thinking, celebrating diversity, and promoting tolerance.
The UW Oshkosh student group is affiliated with the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Appleton (www.fvuuf.org). Their Associate Minister, Rev. Dottie Mathews, attends the weekly meetings, which are Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in Reeve 217 (during the 14-week semesters). Those familiar and unfamiliar with Unitarian Universalism are invited to attend, as long as they are respectful.
Meetings last about an hour, and include the ritual of the chalice lighting, sharing of joys & concerns or checking in, and conversations about spirituality (and sometimes food). The meeting structure is fluid so it can cater to the needs and interests of its members. The group hopes to connect UUs - and people interested in Unitarian Universalist principles and values - on campus and to provide a space for spiritual discussion and acceptance. We also get together periodically throughout the year to attend Sunday services at the Appleton Fellowship, go to university events, have dinner off-campus, and volunteer in the community.
